Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness offered quite a few cameos over the course of the movie, but the ones that fans have been talking about ever since the film debuted was when Doctor Strange went in front of the tribunal known as The Illuminati. Fans got to see some characters that hadn’t yet been introduced in the MCU when they stepped out of the shadows and were introduced to the Sorcerer Supreme in an alternate universe. However, some eagle-eyed fans noticed a few issues with the scene, not the least of which was the fact that there was an empty chair among the tribunal.

Waldron sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss several different topics all stemming from Doctor Strange 2, and that included just what that empty chair meant. However, as it turns out, he’s not entirely sure why there was an empty chair in the scene at all. The screenwriter behind all the madness in Doctor Strange 2 made it clear that some of the biggest questions that came at him in the interview were simply things he couldn’t answer. That’s not because there were any big secrets to keep, but he simply wasn’t told or couldn’t figure out exactly what the answers should be.
When he was asked whether or not the chair was supposed to signal that someone was supposed to be there who wasn’t, he said it had never really been made clear to him. “That’s also an unanswerable question, but we talked about that a lot,” he replied. He added that it was possible it was just a mistake and that someone hadn’t counted the right number of chairs when they were setting up the Doctor Strange 2 scene. However, when he was asked whether or not people knew the answer or whether it was supposed to be “open ended,” he played coy, saying it was a little bit of both.
That could mean that what was started in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might not be over just yet. Of course, the post-credits scene makes it clear that the at least one other movie is going to include some universe hopping. Waldron is playing coy about what the extra chair could mean for that next film.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.
