Thanks to an interview with Michael Waldron, who served as a writer for both Loki and Doctor Strange 2, it looks as though the secrets of the multiverse will bleed over from the new film into some future stories. When the season 1 finale of Loki essentially opened up the concept of multiple parallel universes for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, it basically set the stage for Doctor Strange 2. Now, the latest film appears poised to return the favor, setting up both Loki and the future of the MCU itself.

Naturally, given how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness only just premiered, Waldron wasn’t about to open the spoiler floodgates and infuriate a whole bunch of excited nerd folk. So when he spoke to Digital Spy about the movie and what it could affect in future stories, he kept his cards close to the chest. “Well, I mean, look, everything leads into everything, right?” Waldron said when asked about a potential link between Doctor Strange 2 and Loki’s upcoming 2nd season. “We’ve hired a couple of great directors [for Loki season 2]. [Justin] Benson and [Aaron] Moorhead are brilliant. And Eric Martin has taken over as head writer for season 2. So the creative team is fantastic. As Tom [Hiddleston] once said, there’s plenty more mischief to come.”
Again, that connection isn’t exactly surprising for those who’ve maintained the gargantuan task of keeping up with the MCU canon. With the multiverse essentially coming around thanks to Sylvie in Loki’s first season, it makes sense that the 2 stories would become intertwined to a degree. That’s not even to mention what it will mean for the future of Elizabeth Olson’s Scarlet Witch, who features in Doctor Strange 2 after the events of WandaVision also heavily contributed to where the MCU is today.
It was helpful to have Waldron on board with Doctor Strange 2, particularly since he helped establish the context that made the entire movie possible. “I was glad that I came in with institutional knowledge of the multiverse and was able to get the creative team of Doctor Strange on the same page as me on everything. Because like with Loki, that’s the most important thing when you’re dealing with this,” he said about working on both projects. “You have to all have a shared language of all this stuff, otherwise it can get pretty confusing.”
Now that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has finally been released, hopefully, fans can stop tiptoeing around all the typical Marvel leaks and spoilers floating around. It’s even worse nowadays since everything is connected, so a Doctor Strange 2 spoiler could probably also ruin some surprises for Loki season 2. But hey, maybe that just makes the viewing experience that much more satisfying when it finally happens.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.
