Ejiofor confirmed he will return as Mordo in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant to promote Netflix’s The Old Guard, where he said the team is hoping to start “as soon as possible.” The character is traditionally an antagonist for Doctor Strange in Marvel comics, and at the end of the 2016 film Ejiofor’s rendition has his faith shattered and decides to try and rid the world of sorcery.

Having that bit of continuity lead into Doctor Strange 2 suggests the character may play a much more important role as an antagonist, which would offer stability to what has thus far been a hectic pre-production. The original movie’s director Scott Derrickson left due to creative differences with the studio, and has since been replaced by veteran director Sam Raimi.
After Avengers Endgame finished off most of the major plot threads building up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over 10 years, it should be interesting to see how phase four handles smaller beats like the return of Mordo. If nothing else, that should give Marvel fans something to look forward to now that movie theaters are beginning to reopen.
