Most fans already knew about Gatwa taking over as The 14th Doctor and, more recently, Millie Gibson as his new companion for the upcoming adventures. But every Doctor and companion has their signature look, and long-time viewers have likely been champing at the bit to find out how that trend would extend to these newest additions. Well, the wait for that part is over. Now to wait for the actual show to start again, a feeling agonizingly familiar to the Doctor Who faithful.

A set of new pics shared by the official BBC Doctor Who Twitter account finally offers that tantalizing first look at Gatwa’s brand new Doctor and Gibson as his companion Ruby Sunday. Gatwa can be seen in a unique brown checkered coat and pants over a rather comfortably fuzzy-looking orange shirt, contrasting the actor’s relative youth with a retro style. Meanwhile, Gibson appears far more contemporary, as most companions do, with a fleece-collared denim jacket over a similarly woolly white patterned shirt and a pair of dark blue shorts.
Since there won’t be one of the beloved Doctor Who Christmas specials this year, this reveal is the only bone fans are getting for a while. But it’s still a nice new look. Seeing the two of them together is a good start, and it’s clear they’ve got a lot of respect for each other based on comments from when Gibson was first announced in her role. “Millie just is the companion,” Gatwa said of his new costar. “She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!”
Gibson had her own gushing reaction to it all in the lead-up to them taking over for Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor. “It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have traveled in before me,” she said. “And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.” They’ve certainly got the spirit and seeing that enthusiasm carry through into their performances will be fun.
With this new look at The 14th Doctor and Ruby, the wait for new Doctor Who episodes has gotten even more difficult. But don’t worry, the Doctor Who Christmas specials will be back next year, and that’s not even including the upcoming 60th Anniversary Special. So at the very least, 2023 has a lot to look forward to for all the Whovians out there.
Doctor Who will return for its 60th Anniversary Special in 2023.
