While Blizzard doesn’t overtly state that fans shouldn’t expect any major Diablo-related announcements during BlizzCon, that definitely appears to be what is being hinted at. Rumor and speculation regarding both a Diablo sequel and a Diablo or Diablo 2 remaster has been growing steadily over the past several months. Rather than allow fans to go into BlizzCon with those expectations only to be disappointed, Blizzard is trying to calm everyone down before it results in the sort of negative reactions that online gaming communities are known for.
Diablo grew into a focus for BlizzCon 2018 after Blizzard released the schedule for the event, highlighting a Diablo “What’s Next” panel to come directly after the opening ceremony. As this panel slot is typically reserved for franchises that have new games announced, a Diablo sequel announcement was quick to come into focus. Now it seems like Blizzard has other plans in store.
We know what many of you are hoping for and we can only say that “good things come to those who wait,” but evil things often take longer. We appreciate your patience as our teams work tirelessly to create nightmarish experiences worthy of the Lord of Terror."
Blizzard’s statement does come as a confirmation that multiple Diablo projects are in the works at least, a detail that was previously widely speculated on but otherwise unofficial. Blizzard’s career website has provided surprisingly detailed descriptions regarding each job’s associated project, which attentive fans have used to draw certain conclusions. For example, at least three Diablo projects are rumored to be in the works: a full Diablo sequel, a remaster, and a mobile game. There’s also a rumored Diablo Netflix animated series in the works, as well as an officially confirmed Diablo comic book.
The new online discourse surrounds just what Blizzard is implying won’t be announced at BlizzCon, as well as what will be. The safe assumption is that the big Diablo sequel is what Blizzard’s trying to tell people won’t be announced, but Blizzard could also be saying the rumored remaster isn’t planned for reveal either. Blizzard may not even announce a Diablo game at all, instead focusing on the Netflix show and comic book. In other words, whatever Blizzard has planned for BlizzCon 2018, it’s going to be a surprise. It’s just a downplayed sort of surprise.
BlizzCon 2018 begins on November 2, so stay tuned for more Diablo related news in the weeks to come.
