The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare art director was asked on Reddit if he had any information on Ranked Play, but said that he had “no details” that he could share with fans. Adding on to that, Call of Duty news site Charlie Intel has stated that it heard that Ranked Play is not in development for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. So if Ranked Play is coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, fans shouldn’t expect to see it any time soon.

While a proper Ranked mode isn’t in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at the time of this writing, the game has been accused of basically having “Ranked” in the standard public matchmaking. Modern Warfare’s Skill Based Matchmaking system has come under fire since launch, as some feel it makes every match too intense and that the game would be better off matchmaking based on proximity to other players instead.
Infinity Ward has famously dodged questions about Modern Warfare’s SBMM, which is part of the reason why it was criticized for poor communication. The most likely scenario is that Infinity Ward believes the SBMM is the best thing for Modern Warfare and has no intention of removing it from the game. Many fans online simply demand that it’s removed, but if Infinity Ward has no intention to do so, it seems unproductive to respond to everyone and continue to give them answers they don’t want to hear.
For now, it appears as though the Modern Warfare SBMM controversy will continue. And while some fans may be disappointed by that, others are still having a lot of fun in the game’s online multiplayer arenas, with many looking forward to Modern Warfare Season 2.
Modern Warfare Season 2 is set to kick off on Tuesday, February 11, bringing with it Simon “Ghost” Riley as a playable operator and a slew of other content. It’s unlikely to bring Ranked Play, though, so fans shouldn’t get their hopes up for that.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
